LEE WESTWOOD SURPRISES YOUNGSTERS WITH GOLF ACADEMY VISITS
28 July, 2011
London, UK
Golfer Lee Westwood delighted youngsters this week when he made a surprise visit to three of his Lee Westwood Academies, in partnership with The Co-operative and Activate Sport.
Lee dropped in on Academies in Oxfordshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire, where he hosted coaching demonstrations, Q&A talks and signing sessions for the assembled kids. The camps, which take place across 10 locations in the UK, provide young people between 7-16 years old the chance to learn new golf skills with support from some of the best coaches in the sport.
The coaching programme, which has been put together in part by Westwood himself, covers every aspect of the game over the three-day course. There are also ‘off-course’ sessions which teach young people about good etiquette, rules, marking your card, nutrition, fitness and psychology.
Each camp allocates one coach to every ten juniors, allowing each attendee the chance to receive intensive coaching and first class expertise to help them improve their game. Each junior also receives a personalised feedback form which gives them a breakdown of their strengths and suggested areas for improvement.
In addition to coaching, there is also a competitive element to the courses with juniors invited to play in a series of competitions covering every aspect of the game. Competitions are run for different age groups with several prize packages offered so the juniors can enjoy the experience regardless of how well they do.
Lee said, “I am very proud of my Academy and the opportunity it presents for young golfers. My Academy is all about learning about the game whilst also enjoying it. I really hope that my Academies can help hundreds more young people engage with the sport and get the same enjoyment I do out of this great game.”
Liz Matkin, Head of Sponsorship at The Co-operative, said, “We’re delighted to be involved with the Lee Westwood Golf Academy and glad we can be instrumental in bringing top level golf tuition to youngsters across the UK. The Co-operative is committed to inspiring young people and encouraging youngsters in communities across the UK to get active and be healthy, so partnering with Lee Westwood’s Golf Academy is a natural fit for us.”
